History

Bangalow Post Office has had a long history  of service in  Bangalow and the surrounding  community, opening on 16th January 1891!

The area was first known as Byron Creek and so too was the Post Office.

Over the ensuing years its location within the area changed from time to time and in 1894 its name too was changed to Bangaloe (Bangalow).1901-bangalow-post-office

In 1900 Bangalow was a small settlement consisting of a hotel, store, sawmill, railway platform and four private houses .The surrounding area was developing into a wealthy farming/dairying area.

The Bangalow Telephone Exchange opened  in June 1907 in the Bangalow Post office…. And in 1908 a government post office building was opened on the current site and included the telephone exchange.

Bangalow has had a number of disastrous fires one of which destroyed the timber Post Office. A new brick building was erected in  the 1930’s and is still an integral part of the historic streetscape
